My govWorks app for iPhone and iPad

The govWorks app tracks the alignment of your face to determine if you are properly framed for the photo. There’s no need to fumble with a clumsy shutter button. The app will automatically snap the photo for you when you’re properly aligned. Once captured, the app scans the image to determine if the photo has enough light and an unobstructed white or off-white background. It also reads your facial features to determine if your eyes are open and you have a neutral facial expression. The final step will check for prohibited items in the photo.

Stand in front of a plain white or off-white background. Be aware of shadows. Move farther from the background and avoid bright light in front of you to reduce shadowing.

Do not wear glasses, hats or any head covering. Maintain a neutral facial expression or natural smile, with both eyes open.

The photo will be formatted to US passport specifications. You can save your photos to your camera roll or email them for printing.

US Passport photos must be sized correctly at 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 - 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
